Former President Maithripala Sirisena has sent a letter to current President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa explaining his stance on the 20th Amendment to the Constitution. The former president emphasizes in his letter that he cannot conscientiously support the 20th Amendment.
He says he cannot support the 20th Amendment, which seeks to repeal the 19th Amendment, which he spearheaded, as he spearheaded the 19th Amendment. He told the President that it was against his conscience and therefore he could not support the 20th Amendment for any reason.
The former President has also expressed his regret over the violation of the collective responsibility of the government parliamentarians.
He has also informed the President that he cannot take responsibility or give assurances regarding the other Members of Parliament who are members of the SLFP. Sirisena says he cannot take responsibility for their stance on the 20th Amendment, as the majority of them are people who make any decision in favor of positions and privileges.
Whatever decision they take, the former president, who gave his full support to the 19th Amendment and intervened to bring about that amendment, has stated that it is not a conscientious decision to support the 20th Amendment.
