Let’s Save South Eastern University of Sri Lanka

-M. B. M. Irshad-

Some on line and off line media are publishing exaggerated news on the issues faced by the students of the Faculty of Engineering of the South Eastern University of Sri Lanka and it should be condemned and it is illegal to publish such news without proper confirmation on the issues with the relevant authorities.

As everybody knows, the Faculty of Engineering is the fifth faculty at the South Eastern University of Sri Lanka and the official approval was given to start the faculty after reviewing the proposals and consultants reports by the Ministry of Higher Education and the University of Grants Commission. Further, I remember the contribution given by Prof. Ishak, the Chancellor of the South Eastern University of Sri Lanka and some of the academics and administrative staff who worked days and nights to visualize the faculty at the university. There were many uncertainties whether the South Eastern University would get the Faculty of Engineering or not due to the involvement of narrow and racial minded politicians and at some point, people were wondering that the Faculty of Engineering would be located at Hardy Technical College in Ampara.

However, the faculty was running smoothly without any interruption though there are many shortcomings as it is a new faculty as with other growing universities. If it is a new faculty, it would take some time to infrastructure to be built and the works with huge investment are going on very fast. Further, we should not forget the hardships that students undergo in their teaching and learning environment and it should be addressed and given the prompt solutions. But, there are many mode of learning available in today’s ICT dominated world including medical field, for example, online operations to the patients. We all must remember the higher learning is mostly involved self-learning and experimentations and students should not depend on the lecturers’ notes and explanation. However, we should accept that the engineering stream should be facilitated with laboratories and industrial training etc.

It is very sad that some of the elements including the racial politicians are behind the students of engineering faculty and brainwash them to aggravate the situation and put forward false allegations against the faculty and the university administration. They have hidden agenda to close the faculty for unacceptable reasons. The issues that students put forward must be solved immediately, yet, the closure of the faculty is not the solutions. If it so, all the faculties at different universities at far must be closed since all the students now need industrial training and work experience and thus, only established university which is in Colombo and Peradeniya should enroll the students since the place or location filled with industries and business organizations.

Further, the South Eastern University of Sri Lanka is fast growing compared with other universities in all aspects and some of the politicians are scared about it and want to bring under their control. This cannot be allowed. People know very well how the Late Minister Hon. Dr. MHM. Ashraf worked to visualize the university as one of the national universities in the region having realized the importance and the grievances that few students experienced in the past specially during the war in Sri Lanka.

Hence, people should be aware of this and should look into a holistic view irrespective of races, creed, regionalism etc. and the parents should be educated in this regard and politicians should look into this matter seriously and top government officials should be consulted with proper justifications. The Alumni of the South Eastern University and the intellectuals in the soiciety should play major role in this regard. We should think in the long term and benefit of the future generations by forgetting the petty political interest. Further, we at all levels should try to bring other faculties to this university. It is our responsibility to save the faculty and the university.

  1. I don't think, I want to repeat the issues and problems again and again. It's All over the pages. Do you still say that there are no any problems. May be I guess when your child is in such these problem you may realize. please don't earn the curse of 285 students to you and your family by setting out a false theme around the place. If you have the idea to have the faculty, bring the 100% facilities and call the students. They will be coming to study without any hesitation. Until then, please don't spread any rumours and agitate people by the name of racism and regionalism.

  2. No one can bring the faculty with 100 percent facilities any where in any university. I have clearly emphasized the point that the students issue must be sortedout without further delay. Closure is not the solutions. Why Ruhuna and Jaffna students can study with available resources? Pioneers is likely to suffer for their future generation.

  3. sir, what do you mean? is ruhunu lacking resourses so as SEUSL,thats strange to hear. And in jaffna, of course they are having a hope of success, while what is remaining with us is broken promises, great expectations and bundles of dissapointments. jaffna which started its e fac journey a year later is raeching to its higher level so speed. did we not wait for this 2.5 years? how can that be fair for pioneers to sacrifice their life for future generation. studying with a very poor facility is not called suffering ,it is sacrifising our lives. suffering will be worthy when it is usefull. do you expect us to suffer, suffer , suffer while nothings gonna change. And, how do you expect us to suffer further knowing the current situtaion sir. the demand for 100% facilitay is the resullt of pain and sufferings. A single statement of you cant change the things happening in a minute. and sir, remember we are exaggerating the issue . and if we were this wouldnt have gone to this extend. what do you mean by the faculty was running smoothly without any interruption whereas you've mentioned that there are many short comings sir. thats contradicting. we are not brainwashed by others, we aroused by our consciensce, by us for us and for the well bieng of future generation as well.

Nobody brainwash the students. you are the only people brainwash others. ok.. and we dedicate our education days for getting a qualified degree.. 8. Sir, I welcome your decision of improving our faculty. But we are really sick of those solutions because we haven’t seen any significant developments carried out after all these 2.5 years. Only the lecturers amount kept on decreasing. The visiting lecturers who came first time are not willing to come for second time. They have complained us about the lecture halls and distance of travelling. You are promising that developments will be carried out. We warlmy welcome , and we are happy to see such develpements. BUT so far after 2.5 years we haven’t seen anything. Incapability to run an engineering faculty in SEUSL is now obvious. So why should we suffer? What was our mistake other than coming to this university..? Why are you making us suffer? Suspend our academic activities now and shift us to a most suitable , CAPABLE university for engineering studies. Develop SouthEastern University at least up to the standard to run a engineering faculty as you promised. Then re intake students. That’s all we are asking sir. Hope you’ll understand
