Problems of Arabic colleges in Sri Lanka

      Arabic colleges have been providing a wonderful service for Muslim community for many decades. In the past, Sri Lankan Muslim boys used to go to India or some foreign countries to learn Islam and today, al-Hamdu lillha. We have more than 300 hundred Arabic colleges in Sri Lanka. This includes boys and girl colleges. No one should belittle or undermine the service these Arabic colleges that provide to Muslim community.
   Today we have more than 2000 mosques, Muslim schools, many Islamic centre, and dawa centres. Graduates of Arabic college are working in those institutions. I know well Islamic scholars and teachers who work in Arabic colleges are working with dedication and sacrifice. They only work for the sake of Allah sometimes, without basic needs and facilities. They work without any employment right such as pension or EPF or any other employment rights and still they produce some talents clerics. 
     some good and kind hearted wealthy Muslim people spend a lot of money in Arabic colleges. Of course, some of them get foreign aids and help but most of Arabic colleges are locally funded. It is estimated that more than 200 million or more rupees are spent on Arabic college annually from the local collection alone. It may go up or down. There is no systematic research or statistics on the finance of fiscal aspect of Arabic colleges. Yet one fact is true that millions of rupees from Muslim community is spent on Arabic colleges. 
    Today Arabic colleges are mushrooming each and every corner of Sri Lanka. each group has got its own Arabic colleges. Sometime each other competing to get students. Some of villages have more than two Arabic colleges and some compete each other in collecting fund too. 
    Some of these Arabic colleges do not have proper syllabus, trained teachers, basic library, books, basic facilities such as hostels and good class rooms. The syllabi, curriculums of some Arabic colleges are outdated, still they teach Arabic in old style, Islamic laws in old traditional ways, Quranic exegesis in old fashion.
       some of them still have dress code of old days. Moreover, some of these Arabic colleges teach only Islamic sciences alone without any basic understanding the world around them. If I list, the problems of Arabic colleges today in Sri Lanka it will exceed hundreds of problems. it is not my intention here but, my purpose of writing this article is to draw attention of our community leaders to this issue.
     Our Arabic colleges are badly in need of radical reformation in many areas. It is responsibilities of all Muslim leaders today, politicians, religious leaders. Professionals, academics and rich people to make some reformations into Arabic colleges. 
          There must be a centralised system to run and administrate Arabic colleges in Sri Lanka under one umbrella organization as Sri Lankan Universities has got UGC. There must be one centralised modern syllabus, examination system to all Arabic colleges, All Arabic college students should have access to higher education in our national universities.
          Arabic college finance and fund collection need some radical changes as well, Arabic college teachers should have all facilities and training. As a second minority community in Sri Lanka it would not be easy to do all this without government support and help. so, we may consider some systems whereby, we can incorporate our Arabic colleges into national education system. 
          We need a systemization and re-structuration of Arabic colleges into some Islamic universities or some big institutions across the country. I mean we need to reduce these 300 Arabic colleges into 30 Arabic colleges: 10 colleges for girl and 20 Arabic colleges for boys. Each district can have one for boys and one for girls except some districts in accordance with Muslim population density.
         all these 30 Arabic colleges should have same syllabus and same examinations. All Arabic college students should aim to go to national universities or to do some external degrees.
         Different ideological groups may disagree to this and yet, the main scream Muslim community can do this. before we do this we need to have a team of good academics and intellectuals who can do a field research on this issue.
       I think that students of Islamic studies should do some research into this area. or Muslim intellectuals should organise some good conferences to educate our community leaders, clerics and wealth Muslims who fund these Arabic colleges. Otherwise,  we will be going back into dark age while this modern world is moving fast leaving behind us.

  1. 300 Arabic colleges means , one for five thousand people !
    One electorate of over fifty thousand people have one police
    station,one hospital, sometimes two DS offices and two local
    councils .How many universities do we have for twenty
    million population ? What we immediately need is to assess
    the situation from the very bottom and work out a practical
    solution to the deep rooted cause . I insist that poverty
    is the culprit . I challenge anyone to prove that more than
    95% of recruits to Arabic colleges are not from below
    poverty line ! Unconditional vocational training centres
    are the workable alternative . Time has come for wealthy
    Muslims to think out of the box . The mentality of
    publicity seeking trend , in the name of Islam , must
    come to an end . Mosques and Arabic colleges have now
    become places of disagreements and quarrels rather than
    places of peace . Why ? These places have become battle
    grounds for publicity hunters to stay ahead of their
    rivals . Who promotes , campaigns and preaches to spend
    the wealth on the religion and seek the reward in the
    life hereafter ? It is not underestimating or belittling
    the works of religious bodies but simply trying to shed
    lights on the real ground situation that has not been
    taken into account by the community at large . We are
    walking towards a bottomless pit if we allow the
    situation to continue like this without a stop . I
    hope we know the saying that " too much of anything is
    good for nothing."

  2. Dear Muzammil. you are right.. it is true that number of Arabic college is high.. over our percentage .. there is reason for that.. each groups have got more than what they need. I agree with you that this money should spent on poverty elimination and vocational training. here priority of Muslim community is gone wrong.. some half baked clerics meet with half baked rich people and they do it.. I know one example in one village.. in 1990. Some one big Haji from Colombo built a four story building for an Arabic college.. it really used or not use for its purpose. he spent 20 million on those days,, if had built a factory he would have helped many families.. because in that same village there is another Arabic college.. so why this competition.. Is this for sake of Allah or for just groups competitiveness. we are living blow poverty line in SL. so rich should think that .. they want to go Heaven in short cut... that is not a way.. we need to educate our clerics ..who misguide our rich people ..in this issue.
    I agree with you that these institutes have become a battle grounds for our groups .. it is dangerous. some brothers crazy on this issue.. Millions of Muslim people money is wasted in many way.. this is one of them.. We need proper schools,vocational training colleges, professional institutes. factories, nursing centre,,, but Muslims in SL went mad with Saudi oil money.. it is taken from land freely and oil money also wasted freely ...

  5. I heard talk and I would like to share with you all.

    At the time of madrasha are being funded by King!

    Once there was a pious King. he supports a madrasha. One day he want to check this madrasha and went there. He questioned the students.
    1. He approach a student ask what the purpose of learning
    "He said my father is a imam of a masjith and I want to be like him"
    2. 2nd student he asked he said" my farther is a certain sherk I want be like him"
    3. 3rd student said" I wand to earn money doing bayan "

    Kink order to close the madrasha because of it is not Serving the purpose.

    On his way back he saw a another student and he asked him, what is the purpose of studying here?

    He replied " TO PLEASE ALLAH"

    King said as long as there is one student like this I don' t shut down this madrasa.

  6. Good a good logical analogy at all. It may be one Imam that. Time is different and context is different. At the time of Ghzazi, there are many imams that Baghdad produced.. Imam Juwaini was his teacher. he produced many good scholars..today our context and situation different .. Our need is different,, our country is different.. our economy is different ..
