A Sri Lankan student in Jeddah got the highest marks in the world for mathematics at the recent International General Certificate Secondary Education (IGCSE) examination that the University of Cambridge held throughout the world.

Mohamed Naleer Yasir, the global topper of the IGCSE exams in Mathematics, received an academic achievement award from the Consulate General of Sri Lanka in Jeddah, Adambawa Uthumalebbe.

Uthumalebbe said that Yasir has brought credit not only to the Sri Lankan International School in Jeddah, but also to the Sri Lankan community in general. “We are elated about this achievement, which has set an example to other students to indicate that perseverance will be rewarded in everyone’s efforts,” the envoy said.

Yasir is the son of A.R.M. Naleer, who has been working as a translator at the Sri Lankan Consulate in Jeddah. Yasir sat for the examination in May/June 2012 through the Sri Lankan International School in Jeddah.

Principal of the Sri Lankan School, Majaziya Mubarak, said the whole school is proud of Yasir’s performance, which has added a new feather to its cap.

She said during the same examination, the school topper was Abdullah Niyas, who obtained eight A stars in all subjects.
