It is unfortunate, regrettable and of course reprehensible that the Janaza of the Negombo Victim of the Covid 19 virus had been cremated without permitting the burial as is ordained in our faith. We tried our best in whatever manner possible in the given circumstances to get higher political and medical authorities to intervene to prevent the hurried cremation. Dr Suhail from B’coloa Teaching Hospital who is an office bearer of the GMOA along with Seyed Ali Zahir Moulana former State Minister and MP had been very active until late last night trying to convince authorities on the need to respect religious sensitivities and requirements while disposing of bodies even in such emergency pandemic situation. Though originally burial as an option in Negombo was explored, we are told that burial 10 feet below ground level was not possible due to the high water table and possible seepage of water into the grave.

Subsequently arrangements had been made to bury at Maligawatte burial grounds in Colombo. The request to transport the Janaza to Colombo had apparently been refused by the JMO. Apparently Magisterial inquest had also been resorted to probably out of abundance of caution by authorities in Negombo, though it may not be strictly necessary since the cause of death is certain.

There apparently had been some indecent hurry to cremate the body disregarding the anxiety and requests by the family members.

The GMOA I am told is in support of our position. I have now been appraised about a meeting currently going on between JMO members and the DGHS about the possibility of revising the circular. While we must insist on our religious rights let us handle this issue in a pragmatic and meaningful way given the precarious situation we are in. I am posting this message to ask our brothers and sisters to exercise caution when commenting on this matter however outraged me may feel.

Discretion is better part of valour my friends in these trying times!

I will post a well researched note prepared by Justice Saleem Marsoof PC, titled ‘Disposal of bodies of Covid 19 victims: A Muslim perspective’ so that we fully understand our rights on this important issue at this critical juncture.

  2. No point in expressing your anger and dissatisfaction now.We always think like this after such incidents took place. why did not ask all these officials before they did it...
    1) you know well that they would not keep the body for a long time.
    2) you know well about heath risk on this, so why did not approach them before. Do not make politics out of it. It is gone now. think what will happen to all others. 22 Muslim MPs must be ready to go home this time in this election. Unless, Muslim community send them home and replace them with good leaders we will suffer like this for many years to come. These politicians do not work for community but work for their them ..

  5. Mr. Rauf Hakeem, Did you discuss this matter with the Presidential Task Force for Corona Prevention Task or the HE. President Gotabaya Rajapaksa or PM. Mahinda Rajapaksa,Health Minister Pavithra Wanniarchchi and or The Army Commander Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva who has been tasked to spearhead the National Operation Center for Prevention of COVID- 19 Outbreak, which has been set up on the directive of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa at No. 1090, Sri Jayewardenepura, Rajagiriya, when there apparently had been some indecent hurry to cremate the body disregarding the anxiety and requests by the family members. Further, as this was a serious matter pertaining to the Muslim Community, did you Mr. Rauf Hakeem communicate/discuss this situation with Attorney-at-Law PC. Ali Sabry to seek his lobbying strength with HE. President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to "RE-THINK" the matter or to Brother Marjan Faleel to seek PM Mahinda Rajapaksa's intervention in resolving this situation, Insha Allajh?

In these situations, rather than thinking within political cells, "UNITYY" of community political forces can mean a lot to the community matters at large, Insha Allah.

PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE is a standard "PRINCIPAL" accepted and practiced all over the world in respect to Health matters. If the Muslims of Sri Lanka could have refrained from travelling on short trips to other countries after the spread of "COVID19" was announced by the WHO, on preaching or relogious engagements and had become "CARRIERS" of this deadly "VIRUS" and given it to their family members and village community, much of this calamity could have been prevented, Insha Allah. THE ACJU AND THE TABLIQUE JAMATH IS ALSO TO BE BLAMED FOR THIS SITUATION. Not only have these groups returned as suspected "carriers", but the authorities blame that they have also gone in to hiding when the call to register their return has been made by the Government. Moreover, all reports been broadcasted on TV news points the finger to the villages now "locked down" as predominantly Muslim polpulated villages and towns. Also the behaviour of the Muslims in "VIOLATING" the curfew regulations and breaking the "SOCIAL DISTANCING RULES" set-up and the use of "FACE MASK" overwhelming.

So, the Muslims would like to know (Insha Allah) whether you discussed this matter with the Presidential Task Force for Corona Prevention Task or the HE. President Gotabaya Rajapaksa or PM. Mahinda Rajapaksa, Health Minister Pavithra Wanniarchchi and or The Army Commander Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva who has been tasked to spearhead the National Operation Center for Prevention of COVID- 19 Outbreak, which has been set up on the directive of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa at No. 1090, Sri Jayewardenepura, Rajagiriya, when there apparently had been some indecent hurry to cremate the body disregarding the anxiety and requests by the family members.

Should be given much consideration when the researched note will be prepared by Justice Saleem Marsoof PC, titled ‘Disposal of bodies of Covid 19 victims, Insha Allah.

  6. First of all, the 3rd paragraph is no relevant to the topic. Although it is one of the serious issue that we need to address, by bring that issue in to the Janaza issue is either purposefully or unintentionally diluting or justifying the shocking incident.

Now let me come to the questions asked in the first paragraph. What the SLMC leader has said is, his side of the story and what efforts he and the people associated with him had made to avoid this incident in this way. Whether he contacted those who are in in power or associated with power as mentioned in this paragraph is a fair question and we hope he will clarify this also in his next press release. But at the same time, we also need to ask the Muslim figures, those who that we know well as the associates of present administration, what kind of efforts they made, even if SLMC leader failed to contact the. What I am trying to say is, even if Mr. Rauf Hakeem failed to contact them, don't they have any obligations to intervene in this matter, since they are very close to present government and they also climes as the representatives of Muslim communities? Lets us wait till these individual come out with their story and what they did in this regards.

  7. UAM,
The 3rd paragraph is to enlighten the readers the reality of the situation and to bring out some of the actions that has subject our community to this plight. We should be "BOLD" enough to face realities and not run away from it, Insha Allah.
