Questions raised on wastewater from Covid centres, “Virus doesn’t spread through water” says Minister

The coronavirus does not spread through water, State Minister (Dr.) Sudarshini Fernandopulle informed Parliament today.

The State Minister of Primary Health Care, Epidemics, and COVID Disease Control made the statement in response to a question raised by MP Rohana Bandara.

MP Bandara had pointed out that the water used by Covid patients at a treatment facility in Kebithigollewa, Anuradhapura was gushing into an area in the vicinity of a school.

He said the contaminated water has risen to the level of a waterhole which could be used by the school students to use canoes and questioned if the Health Ministry was aware of the situation and what measures will be taken to address the situation.

Pointing out that the burial of the remains of Covid victims in Sri Lanka was rejected due to the issue pertaining to the contamination of water, the MP said as the school has resumed operations, does this not pose a risk of the children being infected.

Responding to the question, State Minister Sudharshani Fernandopulle said the coronavirus does not spread via water and is an airborne virus.

She further said however, such contaminated water mixing with natural water sources can cause other issues, as contamination could pave way for the emergence of other water related diseases.

The State Minister assured Parliament that the matter will be investigate and steps will be taken to address the issue.
