WB/8598/2020 - Re : Establishment/Construction and/or Registration of new of new Mosques:

Having considered the various reports, complaints and intimations received from other communities as well as state officials about matters relating to Mosques, the Wakfs Board of Sri Lanka has decided to enforce the following criteria with effect from 1st of October 2020 with regard to the Establishment/Construction and/or Registration of new Mosques:

1.Person seeking to establish/construct and/or register a Mosque has to establish before the Wakfs Board the ‘need of a Mosque’ at the place the same is to be established/constructed and/or registered.

2.In establishing the ‘need of a Mosque’ the following matters are to be considered;

a. The Muslim population of the area,

b. Number of existing mosques,

c. The distance between the closest existing Mosque/s and the Mosque proposed to be established/constructed and/or registered,

d. Distance to the closest place of worship of other faiths/religions,

e. The consent of other Jumma Mosque/s.

3.The source of funds for construction and maintenance of the Mosque has to be established before the Board.

4.Once the need and the source of funds are established and the approval of the Board is obtained to proceed, the person seeking to construct the mosque should obtain all necessary approvals/permissions from the relevant Local Authority and/or other Government/other Institutions, as per the Law of the land and forward the same to the Board before the actual construction commences.
