OIC - expresses-solidarity with muslims in Srilanka
07.06.2017

The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) expressed its full solidarity and support for the Muslim community in Sri Lanka against the apparent rising trend of violence instigated by extremists which are spreading fear and mistrust among the population.

OIC Secretary-General, Dr Yousef Al-Othaimeen, in a statement said that the OIC regretted and was greatly concerned with recent reports of attacks on homes, businesses and mosques.

According to Sri Lankan media, since April over 20 Muslim owned businesses and mosques located across the country have come under attack.

Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara, a leader from the radical Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) group, a Sinhalese Buddhist nationalist organisation based in Colombo is accused of encouraging the attacks. He is currently wanted by the Sri Lankan authorities.

Al-Othaimeen urged the authorities to enforce the rule of law, investigate the incidents and bring the perpetrators to justice, and at the same time appealed for calm and peaceful relations between the communities.

He noted that the Muslim community in Sri Lanka has a long standing presence in the country and a tradition of living in peace and harmony with their compatriots and contributing to the cultural and economic life of the country as a whole.

The Muslim population in Sri Lanka is only less than 10 per cent of the country's 20 million population, while the majority are Sinhalese Buddhist.

In 2014, an anti-Muslim riots in the country saw at least four dead, 80 injured and hundreds homeless after attacks on mosques, homes and shops. The BBS group was blamed for inciting the unrest.
