According to the Bureau of Investigative Journalism, Pentagon paid a UK based PR firm $540 million to make fake Al-Qaeda terrorist videos for propaganda.
The Bureau of Investigative Journalism shared this news via a tweet that read, “Fake news and false flags: How the Pentagon paid a british PR firm $500M for top secret Iraq propaganda.”
This controversial PR firm is called Bell Pottinger and some of its noticeable client have included Augusto Pinochet’s Foundation, Saudi Arabia and they have also worked with the US military in a secretive operation.
The aim of this operation was to track potential sympathisers by portraying a negative image of Al-Qaeda, the operation was headed by the National Security Council, Pentagon and CIA.
According to the report the content that the firm produced was signed off by the General David Petraeus and the White House.
Martin Wells, a former employee told the Bureau of Investigative Journalism that he was hired as a video editor by Bell Pottinger and second day on his job he was sent to Iraq for the editing of a secret psychological operation at Camp VIctory.
Bell Pottinger made TV ads portraying a negative image of Al-Qaeda, these ads were edited to look like new footage from an Arabic TV channel.
Fake Al-Qaeda propaganda videos were also created, Martin Wells said he was told, “We need to make this style of video and we’ve got to use Al-Qaeda’s footage. We need it to be 10 minutes long, and it needs to be in this file format, and we need to encode it in this manner.”
This is not the first time that fake news have been created to shape public opinion, in 2009 Pentagon reportedly hired The Rendon Group to monitor reporting on the US military operations to check if it was positve or negative.
