  3. My dear friend Latheef,

I write to you to clarify some of the points raised in your article regarding the meeting with the President which I coordinated on behalf of the Muslim Council of Sri Lanka and the Lanka Minaret WhatsApp group. The delegation comprised members from ACJU, MCSL, Shoora Council, YMMA, ACMYLF, Lanka Minaret and by special invitation Ali Sabry and Azath Sally. The meeting was arranged on the request of MCSL and Lanka Minaret.

It is disheartening that you have accused the political, civil and religious leadership with the same yardstick. This would have been acceptable if it was done within the Muslim circles to attract the attention of the community on legitimate concerns. Instead, you have written to a national newspaper, feeding the agenda of racists who are waiting to pounce on every opportunity to paint us black. I would also like you to recall our discussion when you wanted to confront the ACJU with with an article of your concerns. Let me also be clear that I am not holding a brief for anyone other than defending my action in coordinating the meeting. I take full responsibility for the delegation and everyone including ACJU and Ali Sabry came at my request and they had no personal agenda. For clarity, Azath Sally arranged the meeting not as a politician but as a member of the Minaret group.

Your attack on Ali Sabry and others regarding the schools issue is totally uncalled for. When we brought up the issue of shortage of teachers in Muslim schools, it was the President who said that it was because of the divisions of S/T/M schools and proposed that these labels be removed. It would mean that wherever necessary, schools will have all three streams of education and children will have lots of opportunities for interaction amongst communities. It will also not deprive our teachers of their jobs.

The common school calendar was our suggestion because the President said that teachers were reluctant to serve in Muslim schools because they had to work during their children's holidays and vice versa. You are a veteran journalist who served in the the Middle East and well aware that none of those schools close during the month of Ramadan. You are also aware that the majority of our Muslim students play on the streets the whole night during Ramadan causing huge conflict in the neighborhood. They also end up sleeping through out the day.

I would like to bring to your kind attention that it was not the role of ACJU to talk about education as you claim. We had specialized experts to talk on each issue. Rizwie Mufti was assigned the task of introducing the Muslim concerns and request the President to consider appointing the 400 Moulavi teachers that the cabinet had approved many years ago. He did not speak on any other subject. Your source of information has totally misled you and your accusations are baseless. I would be more than willing to take you for a meeting with ACJU, should you need to clarify anything with them. I have worked with ACJU for several years now, and most of your accusations are baseless. The ACJU was propelled to take over leadership of the community by political forces that was a law unto themselves. Their actions were cautious and appropriate at that time of political dictatorship. You could not expect the Ulema to compromise their dignity and become street fighters. I agree, there are numerous issues that we need to discuss with them. Let us do it in a cordial and non confrontational manner.

Alhamdulillah, you have been blessed with immense talent for writing. I hope you will use this blessing to benefit the Muslims and not provide fodder for the fires that our enemies are waiting to stoke. I therefore humbly request you to please be careful of the consequences to our community when you put your pen to paper.

I have copied our social media groups as your article has received wide publicity.

With Salams and best regards, Hilmy Ahamed
