19 year old Fahma Mohamed from Bristol is set to become one of the youngest doctorate holders in UK.
Fahma was awarded an honorary degree by Bristol University for acknowledging her campaigning work to end female genital mutilation (FGM), reports the Bristol Post.
Speaking to the Bristol Post, she explained: “I couldn’t believe it when the university told me.” She continued: “I’m quite nervous, but it’ll be nice to have my family there with my friends.”
“I had just started school at City Academy where Lisa Zimmerman (from Integrate Bristol) was my English teacher at that time.”
Aged just 14, the then City Academy pupil rose to fame after she led a campaign to end FGM at a local charity, Integrate Bristol in 2011.
UN secretary-general Ban Ki-moon praised Mohamed for her work and pledged to support her and the anti FGM campaign.
Dr Erik Lithander, pro vice-chancellor, University of Bristol speaking to the Independent, said it was “a privilege and honour” to be awarding Ms Mohamed with an honorary degree in recognition of her achievements at such a young age.
Dr Erik added: “Not only has she spearheaded a project that empowers young women and communities, but she’s been able to influence policies and even change laws.”
“She’s a shining example and an inspiration to our own students, and we’re sure she’s going to excel when she starts university herself in September.”
