Sri Lankan Muslim Welfare Association of West Yorkshire:

Sri Lankan Muslim Welfare Association of West Yorkshire celebrated its monthly family get-together.last Sunday. 24-05-2015. it was a very successful event. Sri Lankan Muslim families and youths who live in areas such as Batley, Dewsberry, Wakefield and Leeds. More than 40 families got together to this event and it was graced with some religious talks and discussion on the unity of Sri Lankan Muslims who live in this country.

This event was chaired and presided by sheikh MNM Shafeek and in his welcoming speech he briefly outlined the objectives, aim and history of this association. He noted that this association was formed with good intention of protecting and promoting Islamic identity and spirit among Sri Lankan community in and around Batley. Secondly, Dr SLM Rifai Naleemi spoke about the necessity of unity among Muslims today and consequences of disunity among Muslims. Finally, the chief guest Dr MM Rafeek Naleemi gave a long talk on the peaceful nature of Muslim community and its balanced attitude on all aspects of life. He thoroughly discussed the consequences of extremism among Muslim community and he cited many examples to demonstrate the dangers of extremism and how group such as ISIS brings more harm than good for Muslim community internationally due its radical exposure. 

This association was formed with the good intention of serving Sri Lankan community in this area and its primary aim is to protect and promote the Islamic identity among our community members. Its constitution outlines its aims and objectives as follows:

   The Sri Lankan Muslim welfare association of West Yorkshire is an association formed primarily for the purpose of promoting the social and spiritual needs of the Sri Lankan Muslims living in the west Yorkshire area of the United Kingdom.

It shall be informed and guided by the teaching of the prophet Muhammad (PBUH) in all its aims, policies and procedures

It is as independent body working for the please of Allah to promote consultation, cooperation and coordination of Sri Lankan Muslim welfare in the west Yorkshire area.

It is a body that will base its decision and policies on consensus and the largest practicable measure of common agreement.

It is formally constituted body with a system of representation and accountability

It is a body that will seek to draw on the talents and specialists skills of individuals and the strengths of the community to meet the great challenges ahead in preparing the case for, and advocating the responsibilities and rights of Tamil speaking Muslims living in the west Yorkshire area.

This association has already planned to expand its activities. It is planning to hold a series of religious talks in coming months and a special arrangement has been made for coming Ramazan month. It is planned to have special Iftar and prayer program. It also aims to buy a permanent place for their centre to run all their activities.
